Daniel 8:1-12
Hope in a hostile world
Part 8
At the start of this vision, Daniel was transported far away to the edges of the Persian Empire. The city he found himself in would become quite an important city to the Persians.
The beast he saw is not exactly something we can connect with - a violent goat who flies around destroying everything. This is quite confusing and frustrating at a first read. Fortunately the angels provided Daniel with an explanation.
The rams
We read that the rams represent the future of the current powers of the world. This is similar to Nebuchadnezzar's vision of the statue earlier in the book. The large horn of the ram turned out to be Alexander the Great and the Greek empire.
The final horn
The last horn Daniel sees is the most important. It represents Antiochus who was a king the persecuted the Jews severely. This is the focal point of Daniel's vision.
How long?
In the middle of this chapter Daniel heard a conversation between two heavenly beings. One asks the crucial question: how long?
The numbers given are mostly irrelevant. It doesn't matter what number is given but more what it represents: This will come to an end. God was showing Daniel and those who would go through this that He had a plan for it, He would use it to teach them and eventually bring it to an end.
Jesus said some similar things to His disciples before He was arrested.
John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
The story doesn't end with suffering, it ends with resurrection and the salvation of those who believe. Salvation from sin, and ultimately salvation from the sufferings the people of God must endure across the world.
